This is a fresh translation of an essential Chinese work from the Han Dynasty era, which spanned across "the land between the four seas" from 206 BC to 220 AD. This epoch has left an indelible mark on China's millennial history, traditionally referred to as "Tianxia" (Under Heaven), and today known as "Zhongguo" (Middle Kingdom). The Han Dynasty reign can justly be considered the birthplace of Chinese philosophical thought, where "hundred schools" - diverse directions in art, science, and religion - fully flourished and laid the foundations for Imperial China's state ideology for two millenniums, up until the 1911 revolution.

Primarily, my translation of "Tai Xuan Jing", or "The Canon of the Great Triad" (hereinafter - "Triad"), into English is based on the earliest commentaries by master Fan Wang (4th century BC). He provides unique access to the source of Chinese divination tradition thanks to the fact that his sole author, Yang Xiong (53 BC – 18 AD), was a zealous researcher of ancient manuscripts and prophetic writings of the Shang and Zhou dynasties (18-5 centuries BC), which relied on various primary sources before the Han period.

Given that the main aim of this book is to reveal the content of Yang Xiong's masterpiece from a practical divination and interpretation perspective during the process of self-discovery and skills perfection, there is no room here for detailed analysis of historical and philosophical prerequisites of writing the "Triad". It is irrelevant for us whether Yang Xiong echoes the Confucius tradition that managed to overcome critical contradictions raised by many other competing schools or not. Instead, we will try to reconstruct the original structure and ambiguity of this prophetic text in relation to three other oracles, including the "Book of Changes" (Zhou Yi), also known as "I Ching", which has reached us in various interpretations.

I believe that one of the main shortcomings of all translations published so far is that each of them is exclusively based on commentaries compiled by representatives of the late Confucian school. In my view, an injustice was done to Yang Xiong and his imitation of "Zhou Yi", which is far from simple identical mimicry. For a Confucian scholar, the Daoist system is, in every sense of the word, a source of a whole universe, as the Daoist principle largely permeates everything, and a commentator or interpreter holding such a view is undoubtedly the best interpreter.

In essence, the "Triad" is more a divination guide than a scientific treatise, presupposing multi-level communication with subtle components of the past and future, revealed within the twenty-four seasons of the year and nine stages of the annual cycle, by casting thirty-six sacred yarrow stalks.

"Triad" is also one of the epoch-making masterpieces of intellectual poetry, whose imagery is unparalleled in terms of multifaceted meanings of Chinese archaic writing, the beauty and complexity of which the translator of the following pages tried to convey to the enlightened reader. To facilitate the study of the Triad, additional comments have been added to some fragments where it seems necessary to reveal the predictive text in light of the practical wisdom of the ancients, a need for which will never fade.
