Presented here is a fresh translation of a pivotal work from the Han Dynasty era of China, which spread across "the land between four seas" from 206 BC to 220 AD – an epoch that left an indelible mark on the millennium-long history of the country traditionally known as "Tian-xia" (Heaven-below), and today as "Zhong-guo" (Middle Kingdom). The Han dynasty period can justifiably be considered the cradle of Chinese philosophical thought. During this time, "one hundred schools" of various arts, sciences, and religions flourished fully, establishing the state ideology of Imperial China for a lengthy two thousand years, up until the 1911 revolution.

Primarily, my English translation of "Tai Xuan Jing", or "The Canon of the Grand Triad" (hereinafter referred to as "Triad"), relies on the earliest comments by Master Fan Van (4th century BC). It provides unique access to the source of the Chinese oracle tradition through its sole author, Yang Xiong (53 BC - 18 AD), a passionate researcher of ancient manuscripts and prophetic writings of the Shang and Zhou dynasties (18-5 centuries BC), which drew on diverse primary sources predating the Han period.

As the main goal of this book is to unravel the content of Yang Xiong's masterpiece from a practical divination point of view and interpret results in the process of self-awareness and skill improvement, it's not relevant here to delve deeply into the historical and philosophical premises of writing the "Triad". Whether Yang Xiong repeats the Confucian tradition that managed to resolve critical contradictions raised by many other competing schools doesn't matter for us. Instead, we will try to reconstruct the original structure and multiple meanings of this oracular text in relation to three other oracles, including "The Book of Changes" (Zhou Yi), also known as "I Ching", which has survived in various interpretations till today.

In my opinion, a major flaw in all translations published so far is that each one relies exclusively on comments compiled by representatives of the late Confucian school. It seems to me that an injustice was done regarding Yang Xiong and his imitation of "Zhou Yi", which is far from a simple identical mimicry. For a Confucian scholar, the Taoist system is the source of an entire universe in every sense, as Taoist beginnings significantly imbue everything, and a commentator or interpreter upholding such a view is arguably the best interpreter.

Fundamentally, "Triad" is more a divination guide than a scholarly treatise, providing multi-tiered communication with subtle elements of the past and future manifested within the twenty-four seasons of the year and nine stages of the annual cycle, through casting thirty-six sacred stems of yarrow herb.

"Triad" also stands as one of the epochal masterpieces of intellectual poetry, whose imagery has no equal in the richness of meanings in Chinese archaic script; the beauty and complexity of which the translator of the following pages endeavored to convey to the discerning reader. To facilitate studying Triad, additional comments were added to some parts where it is deemed necessary to unveil the predictive text in light of ancient practical wisdom, a need for which never fades.
