This is a fresh translation of a seminal work from China during the Han dynasty, which spread on "the land between the four seas" from 206 BC to 220 AD. This era left an indelible mark on the country's millennial history, traditionally called "Tian-xia" (Under Heaven), and today known as "Zhong-guo" (Middle Kingdom). The rule of the Han dynasty can rightfully be regarded as the cradle of Chinese philosophical thought, when "a hundred schools" - various directions in art, science, and religion - fully blossomed and formed the state ideology of imperial China for a long two thousand years, until the revolution of 1911.

My primary translation of "Tai Xuan Jing", or "Canon of the Great Triad" (hereinafter - "Triad"), into English is based on the earliest commentaries by Master Fan Wan (4th century AD). It provides unique access to the source of the Chinese divination tradition due to its sole author, Yang Xiong (53 BC - 18 AD), who was an enthusiastic investigator of ancient manuscripts and divinatory writings of the Shang and Zhou dynasties (18-5 centuries BC), which relied on diverse sources prior to the Han period.

Considering that the primary aim of this book is to unfold the content of Yang Xiong's masterpiece from a practical fortune-telling perspective and interpreting results during self-discovery and skill refinement, it's not the place to scrutinize the historical and philosophical preconditions of the "Triad" elaborately. We are not concerned whether Yang Xiong repeats the Confucian tradition that overcame critical contradictions raised by many other competing schools, or not. Instead, we will attempt to rebuild the original structure and ambiguity of this divination text relative to three other oracles, including the "Book of Changes" (Zhou Yi), also known as "I Ching", which survived in various interpretations till today.

I believe one of the key shortcomings of all translations published so far is that each is solely based on commentaries composed by later Confucian school representatives. Here, I feel an injustice has been done to Yang Xiong and his emulation of "Zhou Yi", which is far from a mere identical imitation. For a Confucian scholar, the Daoist system, in every sense of the word, is the source of an entire universe, because Daoist beginnings are significantly present in everything, and a commentator or interpreter holding such a view is undoubtedly the best interpreter.

In essence, the "Triad" is more a guide to divination than a scientific treatise, suggesting multi-level interaction with subtle constituents of the past and future that manifest within twenty-four seasons of the year and nine stages of the annual cycle, using the cast of thirty-six sacred yarrow stalks.

The "Triad" is also an epochal masterpiece of intellectual poetry, whose imagery is unparalleled in the multivalence meanings of Chinese archaic script, the beauty and complexity of which the translator of the following pages tried to convey to the discerning reader. To facilitate the study of Triad, additional comments have been added to some fragments where it seems necessary to reveal the predictive text in the light of the practical wisdom of the ancients, the demand for which will never fade.
