The Grand Triad's Canon: The Oracular Significance of Heaven, Earth, and Man
by Alexander Goldstein
This is a new translation of a pivotal Chinese work from the Han Dynasty era, which flourished "in the land between four seas" from 206 BC to 220 AD. This epoch left an indelible mark on the millennia-long history of the country traditionally called "Tian-xia" (Celestial Empire) and now known as "Zhong-guo" (Middle Kingdom). The rule of the Han Dynasty can rightly be considered the cradle of Chinese philosophical thought, when "hundred schools" - diverse directions in art, science, and religion - fully blossomed and laid the foundation for the state ideology of Imperial China for two thousand years until the 1911 revolution.
Primarily, my English translation of "Tai Xuan Jing", or "The Canon of the Grand Triad" (hereinafter- "Triad"), is based on the earliest commentaries by Master Fan Wang (4th century AD). It offers unique access to the source of Chinese divination tradition because its sole author, Yang Xiong (53 BC - 18 AD), was an avid researcher of ancient manuscripts and oracular writings of the Shang and Zhou dynasties (18-5 centuries BC), which drew upon diverse sources predating the Han period.
Given that the primary goal of this book is to unravel the content of Yang Xiong's masterpiece from a practical divination and interpretation standpoint during self-discovery and skill refinement, it's not suitable here to delve deeply into the historical and philosophical underpinnings of the "Triad". It matters little whether Yang Xiong repeats the Confucian tradition that managed to overcome critical contradictions put forth by many other competing schools or not. Instead, we will attempt to reconstruct the original structure and polysemy of this oracular text in relation to three other oracles, including the "Book of Changes" (Zhou Yi), also known as "I Ching", in various interpretations available today.
I believe one of the main shortcomings of all translations published so far is that each is based solely on commentaries written by late Confucian school representatives. Here, it seems, an injustice has been done to Yang Xiong and his emulation of "Zhou Yi", which is far from simple imitation. For a Confucian scholar, the Daoist system is a source of an entire universe because the Daoist principle is largely present in everything, and a commentator or interpreter who holds this view is undoubtedly the best interpreter.
In essence, the "Triad" is more of a divination guide than a scholarly treatise, offering multilevel interaction with the subtle components of past and future manifested within the twenty-four seasons of the year and nine stages of the annual cycle, using the throw of thirty-six sacred yarrow stalks.
The "Triad" is also one of the epoch-making masterpieces of intellectual poetry, whose imagery is unparalleled in the polysemantic nature of Chinese archaic writing, the beauty and complexity of which the translator of the following pages tried to convey to the discerning reader. To facilitate the study of Triad, additional comments have been added to some fragments where it is deemed necessary to reveal the predictive text in the light of the practical wisdom of the ancients, the need for which will never fade.[/I]
